There was a time when the nation waited on every word broadcast by the likes of Dan Rather and Sam Donaldson. The heyday of TV news may have long passed, but the names of the nightly news titans still carry some weight, and they are among 250 former television journalists—including Ann Curry and Jackie Judd—who have sent an open letter to the White House Correspondents Association, urging them to make a stand against Donald Trump’s “efforts to trample freedom of the press.”
The WHCA is the organizer of the annual black-tie dinner at the Washington Hilton for media covering the White House, including, of course, The Swamp. This Saturday, April 25, will be the first dinner Trump has agreed to attend as president. First Lady Melania will also be at the event, along with MAGA guests, including Secretary of “War” Pete Hegseth (presumably he couldn’t get out of that one, either).
There is growing pressure on the WHCA to make a statement about the president, who has sued more news organizations than he has solved wars. “It’s time to stand up and speak forcefully in front of the man,” former ABC News executive producer Ian Cameron, the co-organizer of the letter, told the New York Times.
The dinner will be televised live. It should make for interesting viewing.
